Isaac admires Jess from afar, but is too shy to talk to her. He dreams of becoming a musician and song writer. His music teacher Mr Collins finds out about Isaac’s interest in song writing. He encourages him and gives him lessons on writing lyrics.
Isaac is part of the school rock band, Stadium, and when Luke the leader of the band decides Stadium needs and image, Isaac changes his look. He becomes more confident, finally speaks to Jess. They start going out together.
He spends the summer holidays at the beach with Jess’s family and develops a friendship with Jess’s sister Laura.
Jess discovers she is pregnant. Isaac’s overbearing mother wants him to go to university to study music. At first the families decide that Isaac will still do that, and Jess and the baby will live with her family until they are old enough to know what they want. Isaac and Jess decide instead that they will get married. Isaac gives up the idea of going to university, and gets a building apprenticeship with Luke’s father.
His marriage to Jess gets off to a rocky start. She doesn’t do anything around the house, and he likes things tidy. Added to that he hates his job.
He is still part of Stadium, and is still writing songs with Collins, and that makes life just bearable. His friendship with Laura, Jess’s sister develops. She is the only person he’s told about how much he hates building.
The baby, Isabelle is born, and Isaac is overwhelmed by love for her. Even though there is a lot about his life he hates, he decides to stay with Jess. Isaac and Jess have found a way to be happy. Isaac has almost finished his building apprenticeship and feels he knows how to be a builder. He is still playing with Stadium and writing songs.
But then Isabelle dies. Distraught with grief, they drift apart. He gives up music and stops writing.
A year after Isabelle’s death, Isaac and Jess are still just drifting. Jess’s mother gives Isaac tickets to the Big Day Out in Auckland for his birthday. She thinks a couple of days together just having fun and being young will be good for them. He reluctantly agrees to go because Jess wants to.
